Expected Eskom Load shedding Outages this Summer?

Eskom plans to incorporate load shedding into the summer months, potentially reinstating scheduled outages if breakdowns exceed 15,000MW, demonstrating it’s dedication to managing potential electricity supply challenges.Despite possible backup plan, Eskom remains optimistic about maintaining it’s current performance levels, which have exceeded expectations in recent months. Group Chief Exceutive, Mr Dan Marokane highlighted the consistent overachievement during the winter season and the significant operational transformation within the organization during a seasonal outlook briefing.

Measures To Prevent Outages

South Africa has experienced over 150 days without scheduled outages, and Eskom has reduced diesel expenses by R10 billion compared to the previous year. Unplanned generation losses have decreased to 12,400MW, a significant improvement from the projected 15,500MW for winter. This progress has not only improved Eskom’s electricity grid but also positively impacted the South African economy.

The CEO of Eskom has emphasized the unpredictable nature of losses and the need for a more conservative strategic planning approach due to the significant fluctuations in losses. However, the recent fleet performance has given the group confidence in managing potential crises, which is crucial for navigating future uncertainties.

Eskom remains vigilant and is taking a cautious approach regarding it’s forecast for the summer period spanning from September 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025. Despite celebrating over 150 consecutive days without load shedding in the country, officials emphasize that it is premature to declare an end to scheduled outages, and the potential for their re-emergence must be factored into future planning.

Summer Outages Predictions

Eskom has adjusted it’s summer projections, estimating a best-case breakdown scenario of 13,000MW and a worst-case of 15,000MW, based on recent improvements in generation. The organization is optimistic about avoiding load shedding as long as breakdowns remain below the 13,000MW threshold. If breakdowns exceed 15,000MW, load shedding may be reinstated, but only in stage. Given Eskom’s success in maintaining outages below 13,000MW during winter, a scenario without load shedding seems achievable.
